To: Yale Administration
We, the undersigned proud members of the Yale community, denounce the behavior of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity pledge class on Wednesday October 13, 2010. On that night, under the instruction of leaders of the fraternity, DKE pledges marched through Old Campus chanting “No means yes! Yes means anal!” This threatening behavior contributes to an unsafe environment for everyone, an environment in which sex is treated as conquest.
We ask that President Levin publicly denounce the behavior of these young men. The university administration has an opportunity to send a strong message about the culture it seeks to foster, the values it espouses, and the conduct it expects of students. By not offering an unequivocal denunciation from the Office of the President, the university communicates indifference to DKE’s actions.
It is time for Yale to take action to address the culture around sexual speech and acts on campus. Events over the last few years have shown that this is necessary, from Zeta Psi’s “We Love Yale Sluts” sign in 2008, to an email rating freshwomen on their appearance last fall, to this year’s DKE incident. As members of the wider Yale community, we are concerned that Yale is allowing an environment to grow in which sexism, sexual harassment, and hate speech are seen as isolated and trivial incidents, rather than as serious issues warranting university response.
Finally, we stand with everyone on Old Campus and beyond who was offended or felt threatened by these actions. We applaud those students who have courageously spoken out against these acts in the last week and over the past years. We stand by all who are taking action to build a non-violent Yale based on mutual respect and dignity. You have our support.
Signed,
Proud members of the Yale community

I’m not an uber-sensative feminazi. I’m just a woman who, like all others, has to deal with unwanted advances everyday that make me feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Yale is my home, its supposed to be my haven where I can escape that. Feeling preyed upon by the members of my community makes me wonder if there is really anyone who takes my feelings seriously and thinks of me as a human being and not a piece of meat. And that’s not ok.

this kind of “masculinity” must no longer receive administrative sanction.
The DKE fraternity members involved should be expelled.
SWIFTLY.
I am shocked and surprised to hear about this primitive behaviour from students who should know better and be able to act civilized in a social setting, especially in an elite university like Yale. These students should be dismissed permanently from the university and given a fine as well, because tis kind of behaviour is not acceptable and will only lead to sexual harassment and abuse of good and civilized people. Take a ctions now and let this be a warning to idiots who might try a stunt like this in the future.

I have two close Yalie friends who were victims of date rape. Both were empowered, assertive women, and the men were otherwise nice guys. All were victims of a culture (often called Rape Culture) that asserts messages like the ones DKE is promoting, that encourage men to see sex as conquest and to push forward when women say no, and encourage women to play hard to get instead of always saying what they want or don’t want. Yale needs to be active in fostering a community that rejects these messages and engages in creating a positive and respectful sexual ethic.

This type of behavior is totally unacceptable.
As a concerned NPR “As it Happens” listener, I am supporting the movement to bring accountability for the unacceptable social behavior of these young men, some of whom aspire to be leaders of their generation.
The designers of this particular event and those who partook of it (I imagine out of a fear of not being accepted) have an opportunity to delve deeply into thinking about the aspects of their own nature that they do not respect or recognize. Each of us is a unique balance of male and female energy, and this incident makes clear a distinct lack of understanding and respect for role of the feminine and the masculine in the overall balance of life on earth. Not to mention that each of these young men are on earth only because they were given birth by a woman. What do their mother’s think? And what are they saying to their mothers?
I commend the people at Yale who are taking a stand on this relevant and important issue.

Yale College, entered with class of 1999 but transferred to Oberlin in 1996 after violent threats and attacks against students who were (or were perceived to be) LGBTQ were met with a tremendous shrug from the Yale administration. This is an old problem at Yale, and the continuum between officially winked-at speech about violence and violence itself is indeed a slick one. It saddens me to see that so little has changed at Old Blue in fourteen years. I hope other Yalies realize that transferring to a more humane college is indeed an option, and potentially an incredibly rewarding one.

I think it’s essential to be blunt here: in a very literal sense, these students are promoting rape. It’s truly that sample. How can Yale’s administration possibly stand by while its own students gleefully promote such a crime and foster an atmosphere in which it’s even slightly more acceptable? If Yale’s administration does not speak up quickly and forcefully against such disgusting behavior, it will be shameful at best and dangerous at worst.

I’m not signing this because I’m looking for a witch hunt. I think to direct the righteous anger of this incident at DKE is to miss an opportunity for real reform. People SHOULD be angry, but they should be angry about this when it happens in their everyday lives, not just when DKE does it. Because despite how the conversation has sounded thus far, this is a real problem everywhere, not just in a fraternity house. Don’t narrow your vision; open your eyes.

I am disgusted and appalled that such statements have been so lightly punished. We unfortunately live in a society where women are, in many ways, treated like second class citizens and are often victimized in horrendous ways. I am ashamed to attend an institution that has taken such an un-progressive approach in its reaction to this “chant” and fearful of the message that it sends to both male and female students.

I was an undergrad at Yale in the early/mid 90s. DKE was rowdy and inappropriate then — and certainly threw more than its fair share of excessively drunken parties — but I don’t recall anything like this happening. It seems as if these recent incidents reflect a serious coarsening of the social ethos on campus. President Levin and the entire University Administration owe a duty to all current and former students to ensure a safe, welcoming environment. The actions of DKE absolutely must be condemned.

Behind the tribal masks of smiles,
pain
the first co-ed experience.
Thank you for the memories
behind the grades.
Thank you for giving back my body,
where only mind remained.
I remember that radical class –
how we were encouraged
to believe in free love,
not marble halls,
echoing words like “whore.”
I remember Berrigan in a seminar of poets,
saying, “Women poets are great, in bed.
Wheat women poets emote on paper,
men turn into masterpieces..”
I forgot
my literary aspirations.
“Baaa…baaa..baaa,”
the white boys sang,
while I bleated for Black Power.
What seems worth remembering
is my B.A. with honors in film,
not the student who shot me
with my legs spread,
or my prize
for the best photo:
rape by one of the judges.
I remember writing something
about rape,
but forgot about the boyfriend
who plagiarized it for his A.
And my parents,
threatening to disown me
for thinking of dropping out.
And twenty years of voicelessness
after hitchhiking out of New Haven,
textbooks strewn on the floor
of an old Ford, trying
to talk my way out
as he swerved down the exit ramp,
his sweaty fingers already up me.
I remember the gun he held behind my head
better than my graduation.
Anita Hill, heroine, saint.
I invoke your name as a blessing
for my own survival.

There is a lot of provocation and posturing in this event and the YDN columns reporting it. We know it was meant to provoke and it did – this is political theater on the part of the “Bros” to call attention to their defunct fraternities and traditions. Why not abolish the secret societies and fraternities altogether?? What, if any, is their place in a democracy?
I’m sorry, I was not aware that rape was an integral piece of fraternity tradition–to be mourned in a nostalgia-veil and pondered as keystone of institutional identity. Cue Seth Meyers: Really?
Unimpressed, try reading Peggy Reeves Sanday’s Fraternity Gang Rape (NYU Press, 1990). That rape is an integral part of fraternity tradition is news only to the uninformed.

In any diverse community, it takes constant care and thoughtfulness to make sure that all members are treated with equal respect. Fairness does not happen by accident; fairness requires planning, guidelines, discussion, and clear naming of ugly and bullying behavior. Yale and other colleges long tolerated anti-Semitism and other forms of racial prejudice, and for the most part that is gone, thank goodness. Now let’s get to work on sexual discrimination and make it something that used to happen but happens no more. Yale’s motto is “light and truth”; let’s take a strong stand against darkness and lies.

More than just a simple apology, I hope that this leads to a faculty-moderated, open discussion event on sexism, sexual harassment, and hate speech on campus, and to which the frat should be invited. It would give people the chance to voice their concerns out in the open and allow these guys to fully comprehend the effect of their actions on others. A similar event on racism took place in 2006 after some campus publications printed some questionable content, and I think both seeing other people and hearing their concerns in person had a real effect on the writers and editors and helped achieve greater mutual understanding.
The Yale administration’s weak and apologetic response to DKEs threatening and celebrating hate crimes against women can only be read one way. The Yale corporation and its administration have been and continue to be deeply responsible for the institutionalization of male supremacy, rape culture, and the normalization of violence against women on campus and beyond.

I do not need to see any disciplinary action against the pledges, as I it’s likely they were altered and doing what they were told. But I definitely want to see a strong strong condemnation from President Levin. Any suggestion that consent is not mandatory during sexual interactions should be actively refuted, and clearly the fraternity system, and likely other men at Yale, really need to be taught about consent. President Levin, please make a strong statement against these remarks, and please create new mandatory anti-sexual assault education programs for freshman men, perhaps with a focus on freshmen in fraternities. Even if it’s only one session, it would be better than what currently exists, as clearly it hasn’t been sinking in.

During my senior year, a Yale fraternity pledge entered the Women’s Center and interrupted our meeting with a vulgar comment. We reported the incident to campus security and an officer later brought the man to us and he apologized. You’re asking this guy to denounce free speech?
Free Speech has to be balanced with public health, and lack of hurting another person and/or community.
Laws protect against hate speech.
Free Speech does not protect threats of criminal behavior and actions.
Free speech goes both ways, doesn’t it? They may have been free to say what they did, but aren’t we free to say that we think what they said is unacceptable?
If only it were speech. An editorial in the YDN is speech. Shouting slogans on a corner at lunchtime might be a matter of speech. Marauding as a frightening mob under cover of night, targeting the freshman women’s dorms, goes beyond speech. It’s menacing and harassing behavior.

Thirty-five years ago, I was a freshman and a rower. I vividly recall the names the heavyweight men rowers called the women for invading their sacrosanct territory. Yale University’s responsibility to its students is not confined to academic instruction, but also modeling ethics and leadership. As a woman, I do not feel safe in an environment that does not vehemently condemn this disdain for a woman’s consent. Furthermore, I do not feel respected by a university that dismisses its female population and ignores this disgusting and abhorrent behavior. How will you explain this in your recruiting pitches? What will you tell the parents who want to send their daughters here? Will you talk to them after their daughter is raped? Grieve with them? Or will you ignore them then too?

The Yale University administration of my time on campus in the late 1990s was actively supportive of sexual assault and queerbashing; it’s sad but in no way surprising to see so little change. This extends even to the perpetrators: DKE members were the sexual assaulters involved in an attack the administration refused to act in response to back then, and were also involved in several queerbashings.
For these reasons among many others, I’m glad to sign this though I am in no way “proud” to be in any way associated with this institution.

This behavior by DKE members/pledges is indefensible. No matter how these comments were intended, their hateful nature is obvious.
By not denouncing the actions of members of DKE, you are condoning an attitude which treats sex as a violent act, and making Yale a less safe place to be female.

One look at the apparently perpetual and appalling statistics on violence against women in the US (including rape and murder), and it should be clear to any thinking person that this “joke” rates as hate crime. Yale is obligated to take action severe action against this fraternity in the very least to demonstrate to any of the many survivors on or off campus subjected to this display. If, as low estimates claim, 1 in 6 of all women in the US experience will experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetimes, than the brutal behavior of this fraternity may have re-traumatized countless women.

As a proud Yalie and a fraternity man (Sigma Chi), I can attest that there’s a distinct difference between harmless, undergrad shenanigans (I was involved in many), and hurtful, irresponsible idiocy.
Whether these young men “meant” to hurt anyone is irrelevant; by turning a blind eye, the University simply sends an implicit message that it will not hold Yale students – who are adults, not children – accountable for their actions.

erm, that should be Amy Wilson!
A shameful reflection on DKE’s current delegation, and a reminder to other student fraternities, clubs, singing groups, secret societies, athletic teams and associations that group behavior should honor and respect others.
Also, the YDN editorial “The Right Kind of Feminism” was a disgrace to the once-proud YDN, where it appears the editorial staff exhibited very similar misogyny, and should also be called out for it.

Not only are the actions of the fraternity absolutely unacceptable, but also, the response from the Yale Daily News yesterday morning was deplorable. The marginalization of rape is most certainly cause for outrage, and the suggestion that the Women’s Center did not act with “maturity” is unbelievable and simply hypocritical. Finally, to hear the frustrations of the many Yale students, professors, and alumni, not just women, referred to in the article as a “spat,” further illustrates the problem that is being continually downplayed and ignored on this campus. Please see below:
“However obnoxious, the chants were not — as the Women’s Center and feminist blog Broad Recognition originally suggested — “an active call for sexual violence.” We do not believe that a drive to inspire rape motivated the young, impressionable brothers on that cold Wednesday night. As the Center responded with histrionics, what could have been an opportunity for our campus to maturely and gracefully reprove public stupidity and affirm mutual respect turned into a daylong, private spat.”
-Yale Daily News, October, 18, 2010
Thanks for posting this irksome excerpt from the YDN. What a disturbing and smug piece of minimizing. “brothers”, “histrionics” ” spat.” One can only assume the author has recently completed the advanced propaganda course.

The problem isn’t that young fraternity pledges showed extremely poor judgment — that’s a given. But should the university fail to take a strong stand against such actions, words and sentiments, the administration is tacitly condoning turning intimidation and sexual assault into a joke.
When Department of Justice statistics say between one in four and one in five women will be the victim of an attempted or completed rape during their time on a college campus*; when 51-60% of college men report they would rape a woman if they were certain that they would get away with it;** and when one out of twelve college men surveyed had committed acts that met the legal definition of rape;** this surely is no joke but a crucial teaching moment.

Is there a more violent crime than rape? Is there anything more barbaric than violating the very act of creating life? I think these boys should be suspended if not expelled. This isn’t about dialogue and conversation. This isn’t just about “unacceptable”. This is about action and teaching a lesson that is learned because the consequence of failing to teach that lesson is serious. It is called a crime. When do men stand up and say, “NO”? It is time. Violence against women will flourish anywhere this sort of behavior is not censured.

Every year this happens and every year they get away with nothing but bad press and giving an insincere apology. Yes, the administration should take a strong stand against this type of behavior, but so should the student body. Boycott DKE. Make them realize that they should be ashamed to be associated with a fraternity that has a reputation of being at best idiotic, and at worst hateful and malicious. Boycott DKE and any other group that actively seeks to offend and intimidate other people just because our campus and our country has granted them freedom of speech. Friends shouldn’t let friends join DKE.

Rape is common, both here in the US, as well as in countries where it’s used as a weapon of war…Americans can joke about anything we want in private. That’s free speech. But using language in public that threatens others’ safety by reminding those others of the violent acts they may be subjected to isn’t okay.
The Latin root of the word university is a community of scholars. When I was at Yale, women had only recently arrived. When I was at Yale, there were no fraternities. If the frats can’t respect that, in a community of scholars, no one should have to fear for his or her physical or psychological safety, they should (once again) be abolished.

This must be the year that the University finally breaks from its hypocritically milquetoast attitude to such incidents, alarmingly common in a supposed “community of scholars”. The rape culture that the University has enabled by its slaps on the wrist, “community dialogue sessions”, and other woefully insufficient past responses perpetuates a damaging environment not just for every freshman woman who sat in her dorm anxiously watching a large gang of her (no doubt) heavily intoxicated male peers actively call for her physical violation, but for the young men who, in the absence of serious reprimand, are taught that THIS is an appropriate way to “be a man” in our society. The University must not, through its own cowardice, continue to erode the safety and, in fact, stunt the growth of its students as healthy, brave, and compassionate human beings.

After seeing much more proactive responses by administrations of other Ivy-league institutions towards threats of sexual violence, I am surprised by the complacency of the Yale administration and saddened by the need for this petition.
As a brother and boyfriend to two different Yale students, I would hope that the university strives to foster an environment free from acts of sexual intimidation. As someone that often recruits and hires individuals from this institution, I hope that Yale students and the administration appreciate that such transgressions would find no tolerance in the employment and alumni networks that are pivotal to this institution’s continued success.

The conduct of this fraternity, and any individuals who act to incite others to behave in an abusive and disrespectful manner, should be penalized. We should not tolerate any suggestion or statement that encourages sexual threats and acts upon any person, female or male. It is the responsibility of the administration of Yale to make known its position against mental or physical violence. Comments such as those posed by this fraternity are assaults to all, not just at Yale, but globally. It is not immature behavior, but intelligent young people who need to be educated beyond what they are learning…compassion, empathy, and respect. Yale is a leader in education with a history of excellence. I hope the institution will continue to stand for excellence by acting with authority and conviction now.

Shameful
To reiterate Meredith Morrison’s point, let’s not take the easy path of punishing these students and ignoring the greater problem of insitutionalized hate. If we can’t eradicate it at Yale, how can we expect Yale-educated world leaders to eradicate it in society at large?

There are people on this campus, (men & women), who have been the targets of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse because of their sex and/or gender. To hear the misogynistic words of the DKE members (& see petty responses to such callous behaviour –e.g. the YDN on “right” feminism) does more than promote an unhealthy culture on campus. Such hate speech also refreshes those traumatic experiences for people (whether it happened in their childhood, during high school, as graduate students or undergraduates, whatever point in their life). The pain, politics and psychic harm of moments when their bodies, minds, and humanity were not respected, let alone considered, are remembered & felt again.

I hope president Levin heeds this message. He should make an example out of this incident to show that such behavior is diametrically opposite to the values of the Yale community at large. The president should do this both for the sake of the community itself and the appearance of us in the outside world. The name Yale should keep on being associated with the high achievements of the human mind, not with the disrespectful treatment of people.

President Levin should respond publicly. In this instance, silence equals consent.
As for DKE:
According to article II of the Constitution of DKE, the objects of DKE are“…the Promotion of Honorable Friendship and Useful Citizenship, the Development of a Spirit of Tolerance and Respect for the Rights and Views of Others, the Maintenance of Gentlemanly Dignity, Self-Respect, and Morality in All Circumstances…”
The DKE brothers behind this stunt should be expelled from the fraternity by its national leadership, and the pledges told to seek frat membership elsewhere. All of them have disgraced themselves, the fraternity and the entire Yale community.
Please add my name (Class of 75).

Leadership comes from the top. President Levin is encouraged to do denounce this in a very public manner and to punish the offensive behavior.
I believe that this dangerously disrespectful behavior requires a strong response. The University should expect civil behavior not only in academic discourse but in social interactions.
My guess is that this behavior correlates with alcohol use, about which Yale also needs to be outspoken in countering dangerous behavior.

As a Yale wife, mother and grandmother, I am appalled by the fact that Yale has not taken drastic action to stop this type of sexist behavior on the part of the DKE members. Moreover, what is the mission of a great University, if not to educate its students on the meaning of a free society, its obligations and responsibilities to all.
As a parent of a daughter at Yale, I find the behaviour of the DKE frat unconscionable. In this day and age, at an institution like Yale, how can these actions be tolerated? Aren’t you nurturing the leaders of tomorrow? Are these the graduates that will make Yale proud? Action must be taken to show that as an institute of higher learning you actually believe in what you stand for and it is not empty words. These young men are old enough to know better. There is no excuse and it can no longer be chalked up to “boys will be boys”. In this day and age it doesn’t take a Yale graduate to know that this behaviour is unacceptable. If those were racist chants…a slap on the wrist and a simple apology would not be tolerated…why are slurs against women minimized as “pranks”? When will the Yale administration actually stand for the women it accepts as equal participants in an Ivy League education? Maybe your admission process needs to be reviewed, these incidents are happening far too often and the response of the Administration is doing very little to create an environment in which 50% of its student body feels safe and welcome. Stand up and actually do something that ensures this will not continue.

Enough is enough.
Drunk or not, the Dekes were way out of line. This sort of incident sends a terrible message to incoming freshmen (not to mention the whole Yale/New Haven community) and is a blot on Yale’s image in the larger world. President Levin and his deans should denounce it as unacceptable and meet with the leaders of DKE and the other fraternities for some serious talk about what constitutes civilized – and uncivilized – behavior.

There are a million ways to shock and bother people, as DKE pledges have demonstrated for 100s of years. That they would choose speech so patently wrong and dangerous is baffling, aggressively anti-woman, and against everything Yale purports to value and promote.

I am a Yale parent. I believe in free speech, but come on, this is not even close, this is way beyond anything that should be protected.

Geeeeezzz… political correctness run amuck again this week. It’s a funny frat-boy chant.. they didn’t actually do anything. You lame PC freaks need to get a life. You’re being just like the lame NPR PC freaks that fired Juan Williams over saying something that most people feel… unfortunately, too many damned people are afraid to speak out again the PC freaks nowadays… BUT NOT ME..
Here’s my chant…
PC FREAKS ARE ANAL!!!!!
PC FREAKS ARE ANAL!!!!!
Everything is a funny chant till it slaps you in the face. Let’s talk after your daughter gets raped by a frat boy (1 in 4 college women are).
Also,
“When I walk into an area with black people, I get nervous and scared. I worry that they’re all going to try to rob me or shoot me. ”
Do you know what would happen if a news anchor said that on TV? His career would be dead. But it’s okay to say things like that about Muslims.
I’m not afraid to speak out either.
Lenny Vasbinder is a racist sexist pig.
Dear Lenny,
Is “no means yes” also “saying something that most people feel”? Is it funny?
The next time she tells you no, are you planning to laugh – and keep going?
Or, maybe nobody says no to Lenny Vasbinder.
Maybe no one has punctured the misogynistic, hateful bubble you live in.
Here’s a needle, Lenny: Lenny Vasbinder is a racist, sexist pig.
Lenny,
Are you by any chance affiliated with Duke?

Mr Vasbinder,
Perhaps you should start a petition?

Trumpeting & teaching your frat’s seeming inability to find consensual sex partners with anything resembling regularity is an interesting choice, guys.
Despicable.

How sad and embarrassing. It’s a shame that they don’t understand that their words and actions have meaning. They must think themselves nothing more than a parody of life. Unfortunately, others watch them, because they are among the world’s most fortunate people. They have much to learn about being citizens and (even unwitting) role models.

I think that these actions merit serious attention from the administration. Although my daughter has already graduated, I fear for all female students currently studying at Yale. It is these attitudes that foster date rape and other more serious crimes against women in our society. NO is NO!!!

Over ten years ago, I worked with a group of fellow students comitted to raising awareness of sexual assualt on campus and supporting survivors of assault and people dealing with related issues. Our group always struggled with legitimacy, convincing people that these issues are real and truly matter. I’m saddened to see that the same converstaions have to be had and embarrassed for boys who don’t have the presence of mind to stand up to crap like this for fear of risking their place in a fraternity. I am amazed at the apparent lack of intelligence that would recommend actions that could potentially demoralize fellow students. And that is not to mention the lack of common decency which is normally assumed young adults have mastered.

today is the first time I’ve heard of this. It should have been national news. This is a hate crime. I cannot believe there wasn’t more outrage over this.
